Energy:
Everyone Pays or Maybe Not
News media
has reported recently on the surge of energy charges popping up on the East
Coast. USA Today June 29, 2001 issue states that "hotel-imposed energy fees
of $1.50 to $7 per room per night, once limited to the West Coast are
proliferating across the USA - and generating heat from steamed guests."
Some enterprises
are not providing advance notice but rather a small display at the front
desk. According to the article, the Florida Office of Attorney General is
questioning major hotel chains in the state. In addition, on Friday, July
13th, the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs commented on a local radio
station that businesses could face a stiff fine for charging the surcharge
if found to be a deceptive business practice.
Not just hotels
are charging the fee. National chain restaurants are upping the bill by $.25
per person under the line item called energy surcharge.
Questions regarding
the charging of this surcharge should be directed to your state Office of
Attorney General, local Consumer Protection or the Better Business
Bureau.
